Permanently blind because of cataracts can be prevented through early detection of symptoms. Not always have to use advanced tools, are now lining of the eye disorders can also be detected with a cell phone.
This latest technology developed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and is expected to be used in communities in remote areas with difficult access to health facilities. In fact, because its use is easy, cell phones are not to be operated by an ophthalmologist.
Basically, this technology works as a radar, similar to the equipment used to monitor the cloud and weather conditions. Radar with a specific wavelength emitted from a tool into the surface layer of the eye to the misty mendetekasi called cataracts.
"Camera phones will scan the eye lens, and then make a map showing the position, size, shape and density karatak," said one of the researchers involved in the development, as quoted from Pamplona Citor Mobilhealthnews, Thursday (07/07/2011).
Surely not just any phone can be used to detect cataracts with this technology. In order to emit radar, cell phones must be fitted with chips and software designed specifically to monitor the condition of abnormalities in the lining of the eye.
The results will be displayed on the screen, in the form of scores ranging from 1-4. Score of 1 indicates that hinders pengkabutan vision in the mildest degrees, while the score of 4 indicates the most severe level that required further treatment by an ophthalmologist.
For now, the technology is named Caltra System has not been able to be purchased in stores phone because it has not been officially launched. The new launch will be conducted in technology SIGGRAPH conference in Vancouver, British Columbia next month.
Cataract is the most common cause of blindness worldwide, but the initial symptoms are still difficult to detect, especially in poor countries who lack health facilities memadahi. To cure it, the only way is through surgery.
